Technician dies in chiller unit explosion
BANGLADESH – An engineer has died and two others were injured when an air conditioning chiller unit exploded in Dhaka yesterday.
Reports indicate that the incident happened while the men were working on the chiller on the roof of the 15-storey Six Seasons Hotel in the up-market Dhaka neighbourhood of Gulshan.
The two injured men, said to be suffering from severe burns, were reported to have been rushed to the burns and plastic surgery unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. According to the Dhaka Tribune, one victim was said to be suffering from 62% burns, the other 45% burns.
The Daily Star of Bangladesh reported that the police detained five hotel staff in connection with the blast which blew metal fragments through the windows of nearby houses, including a house owned by a former government minister, striking a security guard in the hand.
The hotel is a relatively modern construction, having opened its doors approximately one year ago. No details regarding the cause of the blast have yet been revealed.
